Soccer Mommy in Paris

There's something about a small, intimate venue like Le Trabendo that just feels perfect for an artist like Soccer Mommy. Like her music, it gives a sense of proximity between the audience and her. This was the right space to fully appreciate Sophie Allison's dreamy, personal and emotionally raw sound.
She performed familiar tunes such as Bones, Circle The Drain and Shotgun from her recent album Evergreen. She doesn't say much between songs but moves through her set with a quiet confidence, like she knows the songs speak from themselves (and they do). Her gentle, almost brittle voice was backed up by a band whose fuzzy guitars and punchy drums sound created the perfect counterpoint.
All in all, it was far from a flashy or "in your face" show with big gestures and stage tricks. Soccer Mommy's fans know her music thrives when devoid of any stage artifices.
