We sat down with German artist TOBIAS ahead of his show at the Hebebühne in Hamburg. He’s living in Berlin now, but being Bavarian definitely comes through in his music.

English Version:

Who is TOBIAS in three words?

TOBIAS: Tall, organic and funny.

Your tour started in Berlin; how was it?

TOBIAS: Really great, I have a fantastic team with me, and this makes everything easier. Lots of friends were there, as I live in Berlin now, and I couldn't have imagined a better start.

The tour is named after your EP "eine EP für mich“ that got released in September. How was the process of creating it? Do you have a favorite memory?

TOBIAS: I created the EP in Vienna; I like being there to write songs. Villa Lala is the name of the building; it's a big house with a garden, and it was there that we created the songs. A few were already in the works when I arrived in Vienna; I knew those songs were definitely going on the EP—we just needed to finish them up. We also wrote two new ones there; the idea for "eine EP für mich" came about in Vienna, and we wrote "ein Lied für mich" there, too. Our motto was honesty—you should be able to hear that it’s real music, with real instruments and a live feel. We brought in real brass players, which was fantastic. We really wanted to create songs that were longer than the standard two-minute playlist tracks, so most of them are over three minutes long, and one exceeds four minutes. That used to be the norm, and I hope it makes a comeback.

In the song "Bayrische Männer“, you sing that Bavarian men are allowed to cry. Have you always been emotional, or did you have to unlearn the stereotype that men must be strong and shouldn't cry?

TOBIAS: I’m not very good at talking about my feelings, but I am good at singing about them; that really helps me. This all stems from my dad, because he thought he always had to appear strong in front of me. That’s not true, though; it’s perfectly okay to show weakness, which is why I wrote the song. I’m better at showing my feelings now; my mom is great at that, she’s always there to catch me. My parents play a major role in this EP.

Do you have a favorite track to perform live, or one that you think will become a fan favorite?

TOBIAS: For the fan favorite, I still need to check that out, but my own personal favorite is an unreleased song called "Judy". It’s quite different, with a bluesy feel. If I were to describe it myself, that’s exactly the kind of music I listen to and enjoy. I’d also say there’s nothing else quite like it out there, especially in German.

Do you want to steer your future projects in that same direction, given that you enjoy listening to that kind of music yourself?

TOBIAS: It’s always hard to say where things are heading, because I just make music and see where it takes me. The next project will definitely be real live music, a band recording in the studio, rather than big productions with lots of choral vocals, so it’s a "back to the roots" approach with a 60s/70s sound.

You recently got to perform on the morning show. What was that experience like for you, and would you do it again?

TOBIAS: I hate getting up early; I’ve actually been on the Morgenmagazin show in Cologne, and that was even earlier. I’m a fan of TV appearances; I often find them cool because everything is so tightly scheduled: you know, okay, you’re playing these two songs now, then you’re live, you have to be on your game, and then you’re done; you’re well looked after. I’d do it again, but preferably for an evening show!

Nora: Is there a show where you’d most like to perform on? Jimmy Fallon, …

TOBIAS: I know it, of course, maybe one day or Late Night Berlin; that would be cool!

What do you like best about your fanbase?

TOBIAS: Yesterday [at the Berlin show], I was reminded again just how incredibly sweet and respectful they all are. They support me and make TikToks, which really helps me, and they wait outside before the concert starts. I am very grateful for the community; I really like them all.

With "zwischendrin verliebt“, you had a breakthrough. What was it like for you to have more eyes on you, and did that change your thinking, also regarding your career?

TOBIAS: It has obviously changed things drastically; thanks to that song, I can do this full-time and pursue my dream. With the songs released since then, the idea wasn't really that I had to create another track that would go just as viral. That thought is there in the back of your mind, and you hear others say you need another breakout hit; but you can never predict what that breakout hit will be.

Regarding the point about it being cool if the song goes viral: does that stress you out because of the pressure regarding your social media game?

TOBIAS: At first, I struggled with the numbers; I was lucky that the initial snippets I posted actually performed well on TikTok. When things leveled off, I did wonder, "Oh, is the song bad? What's wrong with it?" but I quickly realized, "Hey, it doesn't really matter, and it doesn't mean the song is bad. It all depends on the algorithm." I don't worry about it much anymore; of course, it’s cool when things go well, and it makes TikTok more fun, but I don't let it get to me like I used to.

There is a lot of discussion in the music industry about how touring, or working in the industry in general, can take a heavy toll on one's mental health. Do you do anything specific before, during, or after a tour to try to counteract that?

TOBIAS: I was actually supposed to do that TOBIAS & Friends Berlin show. Then I had a health issue that day; I couldn't perform and had to cancel the show last minute. That really messed with my head because I was thinking, "Oh no, my body isn't working; I'm on tour, so everything has to function properly," and it completely stressed me out. My sister pointed out that now that this is my profession, my life is basically all about music. I meditate a lot and make sure to take time to rest; that’s the most important thing! I step away from my phone.

Do you manage to do that regularly while on tour? It’s not necessarily always easy to find a calm place.

TOBIAS: Yesterday [at the Berlin show] it was actually fine! I listen to a meditation through my headphones, and then I have my own space. Today [at the Hamburg show], it won't work, since we only have one backstage room and everyone is there. That half-hour before a show is always my quiet time.

Now that your EP is out, can fans look forward to new music?

TOBIAS: I’m definitely not taking a break, but I can’t say anything more specific about it yet either …

Songs Tobias would add to our artist recommendation playlist:

"Du trägst keine Liebe in dir" by Echt, "Doing All Right" by Queen and "Irgendwann" by TOBIAS.

Was findest du am besten an deiner Fanbase?

TOBIAS: Ich hätte diese TOBIAS & Friends Berlin-Show eigentlich gehabt.
