Yaelokre – Let Us Walk Into A Fairytale

Have you heard of the Meadowlark? Let me tell you about it. It’s a one-person performance, a universe beyond our imagination, a two-level deep, soft-spoken lullaby.

Keath Ósk created the world of the Meadowlark under their artist name Yaelokre as a diary-turned-storybook. Throughout the tunes and their accompanying illustrations, they portray multiple depictions of themselves: “The Lark”, a musical ensemble made up of four orphan children called Cole, Clémente, Kingsley and Peregrine, and “The Harkers”, four wandering god-like tale-tellers treasured as the face of fairytales. Through the songs they sing and the masks they wear, the "Lark" are honoring and portraying each "Harker".

It truly felt like walking into a little fairytale, or rather one of those Fantasy Balls I’ve seen pop up lately, as I entered the Theater im Delphi on Monday, the 6th of October. Around the ornate tables, the most detailed and beautiful costumes were twirling, neatly crafted masks, elf ears, and headpieces accompanying them. The pre-show playlist consisted mainly of musical tunes — I recognized tracks from Hamilton, Six and various Disney Plays — something that felt oddly fitting, remembering that this is a theater-kid event after all.

Finally, the lights dimmed and the last note left the room. Shortly after, Yaelokre stepped onto the candle-lit stage, dressed like a storybook character themselves, with only a guitar in hand.

The next hour and a half was a healthy mix between folk songs and whispered intermissions, luring the audience into the distant realm the teller created.

There were people dancing, and the key moments sparkled with heavy audience engagement. For the last song, handmade rattles were handed out for a tremendous finale.

As the venue cleared, I could only conclude that this was probably the cutest show I’ve been to yet. There’s something wholesome about letting yourself get immersed in someone else’s imagination.

Let yourself get dragged into the world of the Meadowlark here.
