Ravyn Lenae Welcomes Us into Her Dreams on Transcendental "Blue Island"
Velvety vocals, attention-grabbing hooks, incandescent harmonies, danceable beats: These are just some of the ingredients that create Ravyn Lenae's third LP, Blue Island, into a masterful blend of alternative R&B, pop, soul, electronic, and more. After the critical acclaim of her first two albums, Hypnos (2022) and Bird’s Eye (2024), she continues to blur the boundaries between genres and experiment with sounds to a mesmerizing effect.
The 14-track record, out on August 7, includes the recently-released singles "Handle," "Reputation," "Saturday Night" and "Bobby," expertly showcasing the musical range fans can expect from Lenae. "Handle" kicks the album off with a rousing introduction, an instant earworm that allows Lenae to exuberantly announce with conviction that her "love is like a landslide," unapologetically and fearlessly creating a scene for her listeners as she is about to weave us through her vulnerable and bold artistry with a tempered ease.
Meanwhile, "Reputation", featuring Dominic Fike, veers into a completely different soundscape, embracing her versatility like an old friend. The song is stripped down and raw, acoustically enchanting. "Saturday Night" dances like a blazing vision, while "Bobby" trickles down like goosebumps, with a brisk and buoyant refrain. These singles offer a small taste of the variety of flavors listeners can expect to consume throughout this album.
Smooth, R&B-focused "Never Let Me Go" and "Sew Me Back Together" wrap themselves around the listener like satin; the former ending in a touching phone call with Lenae and her grandparents, and the latter featuring verses that fall slowly, one after another, like the petals off a flower or the leaves off a tree. Another slower-paced marvel is "Babygirl", which includes a riveting verse from Doechii, an absolutely magnetic collaboration.
Whimsical, dreamy tunes are scattered along the tracklist, with standouts like "Familiar Dreams", "Potential", and "Wish You Well" supplying a youthful, airy balance to the record. These tracks are pulsing with energy and soothing at the same time, creating a dichotomy of hypnotizing sounds, which sees euphonic "Potential" warping from a pleasant, easy listen into a distorted, staticky warble, effectively emphasizing the lyrical content; while earnest "Wish You Well" offers a hit of nostalgia, with a softly bright sound reminiscent of the 90s.
Lenae sets her electronic, dance-infused hits apart from others in the genre through her deep-diving vocals. The ear-catching hooks and thunderous beats never drown out her voice; instead, her vocals easily command the space, taking center stage. Songs like "In & Out" and "Let Us In" vibrate with sizzling tempos and echoing rhythms that defer to the main star: Lenae herself. Her voice could easily soundtrack nights out with my friends, dancing feverishly and laughing fervently, with her irresistible anthems wrapping us under the moonlight.
All in all, Ravyn Lenae’s Blue Island streams into the listener’s consciousness and makes itself at home, but I don’t mind, and neither will her audience, who will happily welcome a new and innovative all-encompassing album to soundtrack the foreseeable future.
