Grandson at the Docks in Hamburg with Support from Pinkshift: Protest Songs on Stage!
Grandson, aka Jordan Edward Benjamin, played a show in Hamburg as part of his Inertia Tour at the Docks on Sunday night February 8th, 2026. The last show he played in this city was a free pop-up show in front of the Knust back in June of 2025. People were able to donate to the Iuventa Crew and help them on their mission with sea rescue.
Shortly before the support, there was still a queue to get inside, fans beaming with excitement, waiting to see their favourite artists on stage.
Right when support act Pinkshift went on stage, the energy in the room shifted. The band is made up of Ashrita Kumar (vocals, guitar), Paul Vallejo (lead guitar), Myron Houngbedji (drums), and Erich Weinroth (bass). Their set had an instant effect: everybody's hands were up, and a circle pit formed during the first two songs of their set.
Ashrita opened their set with a loud: "What's up, Hamburg, we are Pinkshift," and the crowd couldn't help but cheer.
Ashrita made a point to mention his disdain for the current "fascist state of the USA" and called out Trump and ICE. He also spoke up against Transphobia and Xenophobia, finding rapport with the crowd.
The band encouraged the girls and queer people in the crowd to create a mosh pit for their song "Love It Here".
Ashrita thanked the crowd for having come down to their set on behalf of the whole band and put an emphasis on the community and energy the fans were able to portray that night.
They closed their set with the song "the kids are alright". The feeling of people letting loose and exploring a new type of energy characterized their set from the beginning 'til the end.
The main set began with an immediate, powerful political message. Over the speakers echoed the voices of various people and how the current political climate in the US is affecting them.
Shortly after, grandson walked on stage. He was joined by Amin Mortada (guitar), Miles Elze (drums), and Maxwell (bass). As fans cheered, "AUTONOMOUS DELIVERY ROBOT" started playing.
Before he played the song "WHO'S THE ENEMY", he talked about Bob Vylan, an English punk rap duo, having had their Visas revoked after they spoke out against the genocide in Gaza. He shared his and many other artists' concerns for the consequences of using their voices. Grandson stands by one point particularly: Don't let yourself be silenced. Speak up regardless.
He shared a bit about the song "Running From My Shadow", which is a collaboration with Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park, for example, how his band got to tour with them. The band and he also played "Hold The Line", a song that originally features Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, who he named one of his heroes!
Their last song was "Blood // Water". As is tradition, the band came back on stage for an encore, for which they played "WWIII" and "Stick Up".
Grandson expressed gratitude for his fans, for his team, and for the crew having worked the show.
His set was defined by the political lyrics of his songs, which he calls 'Protest Songs'. Staying true to the message he is trying to spread, multiple times that evening, he emphasized his strong opinion against Trump, ICE, and fascism. He also spoke out against the German political parties AFD and the CDU, and made sure to mention the room being a safe space for everyone. Grandson also positioned himself against climate change and against AI, and spoke up about the importance of being human! Fans agreed with those sentiments, shown by one person in the crowd leading "Siamo tutti antifacisti" (We're all anti-fascists) chants, as well as "Ganz Hamburg hasst die AFD" (All of Hamburg hates the AFD), and one that calls for a free Palestine.

Throughout 2022 and the beginning of 2023 I started to photograph with my phone at shows I went to, in April of 2023 I got to photograph with my camera at a show for the first time and have been doing it since. I love that it´s possible to combine (live) music and photography!
Excited to see what the future will bring!
