It has been an exciting year for Jolle. From being on stage during her festival summer, a collab with KITSCHKRIEG, alongside singles such as “danke für nichts” or “fingergun”. Right after her performance on the main stage at MS DOCKVILLE in Hamburg (the city where her life took a 180 one night during a karaoke night out back in 2020), Jolle met up with THE UNSEEN Magazine to discuss her upcoming debut album sunny side up/: down.

HERE'S THE FULL INTERVIEW:

Andy: Jolle, today is a home game for you.

Jolle: It was still exciting. It was even more exciting than usual. Oh my God.

I wanted to ask how you feel about having just played the main stage, but I can tell you’re very excited.

Jolle: I was so excited. I also have to say, I’m totally overwhelmed by these big stages. And I don’t even look anymore where we’re playing beforehand, because then I don’t sleep for a week and I pee myself. Today, I didn’t look at where we were playing. But I just naturally assumed we were playing on the smaller stage. I got here, and I was like, no, this can’t be right. And then it was the big stage, and I was like, "No, guys, it’s not going to be full. No one is going to come." And it was so full, and it was so beautiful, and the people were so lovely. Then, of course, I went up there having a full-on panic attack. But then it got better, yeah.

So the 30 minutes before that were very, very exciting?

Jolle: Yeah, always.

Do you have a pre-show ritual that you always follow?

Jolle: Yeah, it’s gotten better since. I now have a really great singing teacher, and she taught me how to breathe properly and how to warm up my voice properly. I also had another great coach who helped me so much with channeling that panic and then turning it into energy. And that helped a lot. I used to think it was all nonsense, that it would never get better. But there are definitely things you can do; especially breathing is really intense when you properly breathe yourself down. The nervous system reacts immediately.

What’s more calming, then, is something like an evening at a karaoke bar?

Jolle: Well, I wouldn’t really say that anymore either. I don’t go out partying anymore. I don’t drink alcohol. I’ve become so boring anyway. I’m like a grandma, but somehow there’s no other way. Life has become so exciting. I love chilling on the sofa with my cats. But I have been to the karaoke bar before. And I know where you’re going with this.

Exactly. That played a very, very big role in your career. So what’s your favorite karaoke bar song?

Jolle: So, back then, I really used to go to Thai-Oase a lot. Shoutout. And I was there with my colleagues. I was actually doing project management at the advertising agency where I worked. And we were having drinks there in the evening.

I sang Juli’s "Perfekte Welle" there, so I’d log that as my favorite karaoke song. And then my colleagues called me the next day.

And I was like, "Oh God, walk of shame. I sang yesterday." And they were like, "Huh? It actually wasn’t that bad. Do you want to maybe do some vocals for an advertising campaign here with us?" And that was actually my first time in a studio. But then getting into music happened through friends and through my environment.

Your festival summer is almost over. You only have Superbloom left. What’s the biggest takeaway from this summer, maybe also for your tour, which is coming up soon?

Jolle: Maybe really just not to drive myself so crazy beforehand. All the festivals were actually absolutely amazing and super cute, without exception. And I worried so much beforehand, seriously. I slept so badly. I was so nervous. And in the end, everything was fine. In the end, there are just lovely people standing in front of the stage and beautiful people looking at you, and then everything is okay again. And I’m really taking that with me for the tour.

My nephew drew a little Pokémon for me and made it into a necklace. I’ve been wearing it since the first festival, and everything has gone well ever since. I like to imagine that it brings me a little bit of luck, too.

Things are staying exciting for you. Your debut album sunny side up/: down is coming out soon.

Jolle: The concept of the album has two sides. I’ve received different diagnoses in my psychotherapy now. But one of them is definitely bipolar disorder, at least to some extent. It’s always been like that for me my whole life, that I’ve had very extreme phases. Either I was incredibly euphoric and very, very productive and really caught up in the rush, always full of adrenaline; everything had to happen immediately and quickly, and everything was amazing.

But then I also had my bad phases. And somehow I never really understood it until I was in therapy, but also through music, and eventually managed to calm down a little; I learned a lot about myself. And that’s exactly what the album is.

I tried to put the last few years into it, and everything I felt during that time, putting each feeling into a song.

And that’s why it’s called sunny side up/: down, because it has two sides.

Do you want to give us a little hint that fans might only understand after they’ve listened to the album?

Jolle: I want to say two things about it. First of all, my absolute favorite moment is that I was just talking about the two sides, and "plusminus" is the song that’s exactly in the middle. It starts with major chords and then turns into minor chords over the course of the song. And exactly where the key changes, the mood changes, too. That’s the moment when you have to flip the record over. So basically, you switch from the Happy Side to the Sad Side. I don’t think you can get that if you don’t have the vinyl.

And, big shoutout as well, there’s a little Easter egg in the song "plusminus." In the first verse, I sing, "Heute ist ein schöner Tag. Ich mach mir keinen Kopf. Welt geht unter, so wie jedes Jahr. Sunnyside is up." Then in the background comes, "Heute ist so ein schöner Tag!" And those are my nieces and nephews who sang that. And yeah, I think that’s really cute.

Andy: Nice. I was just about to say, I looked at the tracklist, and I didn’t see a feature, but then there’s a secret feature?

Jolle: A secret feature with my favorite little babies.

You recently released a collab with Kitschkrieg, "Pissed". What would be a dream feature for you, where you’d say, "Hey, I want to have done this one day?"

Jolle: I find that difficult because I don’t want to jinx it. You know what I mean? Because once you say it out loud, maybe it won’t happen.

I think the person who really blew me away this week, or rather last week, was makko with his international feature with The Chainsmokers. I’m an absolutely huge makko fan. If he ever wanted to work with me, I would completely freak out. But otherwise, I’m also looking forward to working more with female artists now.
I met a really wonderful person, Ami Warning, who I think is so, so, so great, and I hope that maybe we’ll do something together one day. I’d be very, very happy about that.

What are two or three songs that are on your current playlist where you’d say, "These are my favorite tracks?" They don’t have to be yours, but they can be.

Jolle: So I don’t listen to my own music in my playlist, absolutely not. I find that super weird. I really love singing it, though, and then I also really love feeling the things that I felt when I made it.

There’s a song called "Schwarzes Wasser". It’s been a very, very long time since I wrote it, but I was doing really, really badly at the time. But I met a lot of great people through it who also wrote this song with me. And somehow it sometimes calms me down when I’m having really bad panic. So if anything, that’s what I listen to.

But there are currently a lot, a lot of songs by Yung Lean on my playlist. I’m really back on that wave.
I think my favorite song right now is "Agony" and, of course ", STORM", the one he released with the crazy choreography.

Then I’m really stuck on Olivia Dean right now. I listen to the albums over and over again. Such an incredible artist.

The person who inspired me the most this year in terms of visuals and artistry is RAYE, who made that song with Hans Zimmer, "Click Clack Symphony", but also everything else this woman has released. Really, they gave her the stage, and she took it and did something so incredible with it, and that’s so inspiring. So yeah, she’s definitely on my playlist.

And then I’d definitely also love to include "Weg hier raus" by Apsilon, because his album is incredible. It really moved me.

And I was lucky enough to work with one of my dream producers this year and to continue working with him. His name is Bazzazian. And he also co-produced this song, along with his son Bijan.

I think the two of them make such incredible music, and Arda as well. And I think the album Glanz Null turned out to be such an incredible album. You can only shout it out.

Jolle's debut album sunny side up/: down will be out September 4, 2026. Make sure to check it out!

German Transcript:

Andy: Jolle, heute ist Heimspiel für dich.

Jolle: Es war trotzdem aufregend. Es war noch mehr aufregend als sonst. Oh mein Gott.

Also, die 30 Minuten davor waren sehr, sehr aufregend?

Jolle: Ja, immer.

Was ist denn so dein Lieblings-Karaoke-Bar-Song?

Es kommt bald dein Debütalbum sunny side up/: down raus.

Jolle: Ich will zwei Sachen dazu sagen.
