Local talent from Englewood rocks through SWFL music scene with band Sataria

At some point when we were younger, we all had the dream of becoming famous, or of being in a band, or of being a movie star. Some of us let this dream go, while others stayed persistent and pulled those dreams of being something more into reality.

Peyton Carnell is a musician from Englewood, Florida, who likes to play as many genres as he can. Currently, Carnell plays guitar with his cousin, Andrew, in their metal band Sataria. They are partnered by their bassist and drummer.

Carnell shared the fond memory of finding the two through the notorious dating app, Tinder. “Andrew had made an ad on Tinder saying we needed a drummer and a bassist, and they were the only guys who hit us up that also had instruments.”

Though the band was formed in Carnell's’ junior year of high school and had gone through many names and members, the Sataria we have now has stuck together like glue.

While being an Englewood local at heart, Carnell favors the Fort Myers and Cape Coral area, “That’s where the great music and cool folks are.” His hometown may have a lively music community, but it simply doesn’t align with his tastes. If you’re into Jimmy Buffet cover bands, then maybe Englewood is the place for you.

When it comes to an artistic technique, everyone has their own way of thinking or going about it. Everyone also has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. “I can sit for hours and play until I find a single riff I like,” Carnell stated, explaining his process, “The only hard part about writing, I think, is finding that seed of a song.”

The last bits of composing a song could be compared to finding pieces of a puzzle that you’re creating as you go. Carnell expressed that he repeats his process until he finds a composition that he likes. Then he goes to his bandmates to get their opinions and critique. Their goal during that time is to have fun and get a song written or finished before practice ends.

Surrounded by music a majority of the time, there are habits and metaphors that you learn can also be applied to everyday life. “One thing creating music has taught me is to let go and let everything come naturally,” he mentions, as this is how his favorite solos and riffs were made, “Sometimes I just have to stop overthinking everything and let the fingers play.”

If there is one thing that the scene in Southwest Florida should be known for, it is the ability to create a mosh pit in the most unlikely of venues. One venue that reigned over the scene in Cape Coral was Ollie’s Pub.

During the day, it was a pub for open mic, trivia, and comedy events. At night and on the weekends, local musicians were able to host shows and concerts in support of the venue and community. Carnell and his bandmates in Sataria were able to make an appearance in a few of those shows before the venue shut down in April of 2024.

I just like watching people have fun and forget about their shit job or any other thing they’re dealing with in that moment, they’re just having fun to some random local metal band.

From wild head banging to sweaty smiles, Carnell admires the freedom and mindless moshing that the audience displays while listening to Satarias’ music.

Carnell’s greatest inspirations include American musicians like B.B. King and Dimebag Darrell. Their genres range from heavy metal to electric blues, both being idols in their categories.

Sataria is consistently booking shows around Southwest Florida and sharing their music to platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. They keep their audience in the loop with upcoming shows through posts and stories on Instagram.

To get to know them, listen to their song "Shapeshifter" or their most recent release "Space Hooker"!
