Vielleicht, Vielleicht... Vienna? AnnenMayKantereit Just as They Are
With Henning May in his favourite Pokémon shirt and no need for a big spectacle, AnnenMayKantereit took the stage at Vienna’s Stadthalle again on the 19th of September for a night that felt refreshingly authentic and was simply about having fun.
Starting off the evening, Ami Warning, alongside her band, warmed up the crowd, singing about the "waves" of life, from moments of joy to the loss of her father. Her rich voice on songs like "Auszeit" carried a warmth that felt like the last rays of sun on a late summer evening spent outside with friends, while already hinting at AnnenMayKantereit‘s raw and distinctive sound that was to follow.
After their first Vienna show at B72 in 2014, AnnenMayKantereit have returned to the city time and time again, gradually moving from smaller venues to the sold-out Wiener Stadthalle. This clearly paid off: fans were eager to sing along whenever they could and happily played along whenever the band called for a reaction, whether cheering for their birth year or dancing to "Lass es kreisen". Playing unreleased songs, just like the old days, they encouraged the audience to join in any way they wanted, whether they got it right or not. But the crowd really came alive for favourites like "Pocahontas" or "Vielleicht Vielleicht", singing along to every word. At one point, they asked if there was anyone in the audience who didn’t speak any German, pointing out a few people jumping around at the very back before playing a cover of "Valerie" for them and getting the crowd even more excited.
For the encore, Henning May first eased into "Barfuß am Klavier" with a little intro of his own, repeatedly singing what might just be his favourite word "vielleicht, vielleicht, vielleicht...", before giving Vienna its own little moment, singing about Ottakringer beer and seeing the city at night. The encore eventually came to an end with "Ausgehen", closing out a night that had felt as easy-going and genuine as the band themselves.
